What Are Botox and Fillers?

Botox and dermal fillers are two non-surgical injectable cosmetic treatments used to address various signs of aging and enhance facial appearance. While both are injectable treatments, each serves a different purpose and works through different mechanisms.

Botox

Botox is the brand name for a toxin called Botulinum Toxin Type A, made from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. As a neuromodulator, Botox works by temporarily blocking the signals from nerves to muscles, causing temporary paralysis in the desired area. As a result, the overlying skin smooths out, reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Botox is mainly used to treat dynamic wrinkles—wrinkles that occur due to repeated facial expressions and movements. In particular, Botox treats frown lines, forehead lines, and crow’s feet. The effects of Botox usually last for about three to six months, after which the treatment can be repeated to maintain the desired results.

Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers are gel-like substances that are injected under the skin to restore lost volume, smooth wrinkles and lines, and enhance facial contours. Unlike Botox, fillers don’t impact the patient’s musculature, rather they work by volumizing the area to treat static wrinkles that are visible even when the patient’s face is at rest and to restore volume in areas like the cheeks, lips, and under-eye hollows.

There are several types of dermal fillers, with the most common being hyaluronic acid-based fillers, such as Juvéderm and Restylane. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance in the body that helps retain moisture and maintain skin elasticity.

What Are the Basic Steps Involved in Dr. Abtahi’s Botox and Dermal Filler Procedures?

Dr. Abtahi has a highly personalized approach to Botox and dermal filler treatments. This is because each patient has unique goals and a unique facial morphology.

After several years of experience, Dr. Abtahi has found that the following fundamental steps lead to the best results from both Botox and dermal fillers:

The first step in getting a successful Botox or dermal filler treatment is the patient consultation. During this time, Dr. Abtahi assesses the patient’s concerns, desires, goals, and reasons for wanting the treatment. Furthermore, patients will discuss their medical history, and Dr. Abtahi will properly ascertain which treatment will best achieve their desired results.

Once the goals have been identified, the patient agrees to a treatment appointment. These generally only take fifteen to twenty minutes as Botox and dermal fillers can be administered very quickly.  To begin the procedure, Dr. Abtahi cleans the treatment area, and in some cases will apply a topical anesthetic to minimize discomfort during the injections.

Dr. Abtahi will carefully inject small amounts of Botox or dermal fillers into the targeted areas using a fine needle. The number of injections and units depends on the treatment area and the patient’s desired results.

After the procedure, the patient can leave the practice and resume most normal activities. Dr. Abtahi will provide post-treatment instructions, such as avoiding strenuous activity, direct sunlight, and alcohol for a specific period.

A follow-up appointment may be scheduled to assess the results and determine if any additional treatments are needed. Dr. Abtahi will also help patients determine their maintenance schedule, which are typically scheduled every four to six months, depending on the patient’s goals.

Choosing the Right Botox and Dermal Filler Provider

Getting the desired results from Botox and dermal fillers means choosing the right provider. Patients can take the following variables into account when deciding on their provider:

  • Qualifications and Credentials: Patients should look for a provider who is properly trained and experienced in both Botox and dermal fillers. The provider should have the necessary certifications and credentials, be able to show these to the patient, and show proof of past results.
  • Experience and Specialization: Look for a provider who has experience and specializes in Botox and dermal filler treatments. Experienced practitioners will have a better understanding of facial anatomy, injection techniques, and how to minimize potential risks.
  • Reputation: Research the provider’s reputation by reading reviews and testimonials from previous patients. Look for a provider who has a strong reputation for delivering safe, effective, and high-quality treatments, and an extensive portfolio of before and after photos and positive testimonials.
  • Consultation Process: Choose a provider who takes the time to listen to patient concerns, answer questions, and who develop a customized treatment plan that meets specific needs and goals. Because Botox and dermal fillers are on-going treatments, it’s essential that a provider and patient have an enjoyable rapport.

What Patients Must Understand Before Deciding on Botox or Dermal Fillers

Before committing to either Botox or dermal fillers, patients must understand several essential factors to make an informed decision and have realistic expectations about each procedure’s outcomes. Doing so will help patients achieve the best possible results from their treatment.

Treatment Goals

Understand that Botox and dermal fillers serve different purposes. Botox is mainly used to treat dynamic wrinkles caused by muscle movement, while dermal fillers address static wrinkles and restore volume in the face. Patients can certainly consider and discuss the potential to combine both treatments to achieve more comprehensive results. In some cases, a more permanent solution, such as a facelift, might better-suit some patients. Patients can discuss this with Dr. Abtahi during the consultation

Temporary Results

Both Botox and dermal fillers provide temporary results, requiring maintenance treatments to maintain the desired effect. The duration of the results varies, depending on the specific product and treatment area and the metabolism and personal lifestyle of each patient.

Risks and Side Effects

While Botox and dermal fillers are safe and well-tolerated, there can be risks and side effects. Common side effects include swelling, bruising, redness, and discomfort at the injection site. More severe but rare complications may include infection, allergic reactions, or migration of the filler; however, these risks are mitigated by selecting an experienced, qualified, and affiliated provider.

Costs

Depending on the number of units of product needed, Botox and dermal fillers can be costly, particularly when considering maintenance treatments. Patients must ensure they have a clear understanding of the costs and any financing options available before committing to either procedure.

Realistic Expectations

Crucially, patients must understand that Botox and dermal fillers can provide significant enhancements to their appearance. However, Botox and fillers won’t make patients look like a completely different person, nor will either treatment stop the aging process. Patients must align their expectations with reality for the procedures—best done during consultation with an honest, experienced provider.
