Even a little extra fat in the upper neck area can cause the appearance of a "double chin" that can be bothersome to both men and women. The excess pockets of fat under the chin (also known as the submental area) may be caused by weight fluctuations, aging, or genetics that lead to a weaker chin and jawbone for an undefined profile. Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Scott Kasden is proud to offer a new way to get rid of neck fat at the plastic surgery practice of Scott E. Kasden, M.D. in Southlake, TX. Approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Kybella is the first nonsurgical treatment for submental fat. The active ingredient in Kybella is a synthetic version of deoxycholic acid that acts like the natural DA in the body to break down and absorb fat. Once it is injected under the chin, you may see a noticeable reduction in fat. When the fat is destroyed, the cells cannot return, so you are able to enjoy your new, slim profile and strong jawline for years to come.
The best patients for Kybella injections have excess fat in the upper neck (submental area) that causes a double chin or unwanted fullness. This injection treats stubborn pockets of fat that cannot be reduced with normal weight loss methods due to genetics, aging, or other conditions. If you are at a healthy weight, but diet and exercise have not helped to reduce the fat in your upper neck, Kybella may be the right treatment for you. While Kybella can remove small to moderate amounts of fat in the submental area, larger amounts of fat may require surgical liposuction.
"Dr. Kasden made my first surgery experience very comfortable, ensuring I knew all about my procedure, and giving me AMAZING results! He provides extremely well pre and post op care, and his office staff is always very friendly. I recommend him to everyone I know!"- C. / Healthgrades / Sep 18, 2018
"I am a 41yrs old black female and this is my first plastic surgery experience (performed Friday and today is Monday morning). I did my homework on the abdominoplasty procedure for months and scheduled several consultations. I'm so lucky that Dr. Kasden was my first consultation. He literally spent 2 hours with me discussing the procedure and answering my questions. He allowed me to watch a video of his work and he even drew a diagram so that I could better understand the procedure. Sharon, the office manager was just as awesome and personable and she was always available to answer my questions whenever I called. Recovery was tough at first, but Dr. Kasden and the staff at Baylor Hospital in Irving were stellar in being attentive and ensuring my comfort. Not only do I recommend Dr. Kasden for plastic surgery, but I'm already researching my next procedure (I want to transfer my own fat into my breasts). I cant see myself going to another surgeon."- S.P. / Yelp / Jul 08, 2019

Kybella is performed during an in-office appointment. Dr. Kasden or a member of his team will apply a numbing ointment to the treatment area, if requested, after the skin has been cleansed. The procedure takes about 15 – 20 minutes, which includes several small injections targeting the submental area. Some patients may only need one treatment to reach their goal, while others may need multiple treatments spaced 3 – 4 weeks apart.
What to Expect
Kybella doesn't require general anesthesia, so you are able to leave the office as soon as you feel comfortable to resume your normal activities. You may have temporary numbness, bruising, or swelling under your chin, but this should not last longer than a few days. Call our office immediately if you are experiencing any unusual side effects, such as facial muscle weakness, difficulty swallowing, or if your smile is uneven. While the fat cells that are destroyed do not return, the remaining cells can become larger, so you should maintain a steady weight after your Kybella injections to prevent new pockets of fat from forming. Optimal results following this treatment leave your neck looking sleeker and slimmer and your profile will be more defined.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does Kybella cost?
The price of Kybella treatments will depend on how many treatments are needed. During your consultation, a customized plan will be created to work with your goals and budget. A member of our team can also discuss payment options with you during your consultation.
How does Kybella work?
The active ingredient in Kybella, deoxycholic acid, works to break down and destroy fat cells in the body. After they are destroyed, these fat cells will not grow back. Therefore, additional Kybella treatments should not be necessary once you have reached your desired outcome.
Can Kybella be used to treat other areas of the body?
Currently, Kybella is only available for treatment of the area below the chin. Kybella has been proven to effectively reduce the appearance of a double chin. Kybella has not been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use on any other areas of the body.
Am I eligible for a Kybella treatment?
There are a few factors that could make you ineligible to receive a Kybella treatment. You must be over the age of 18 years old, not pregnant or breastfeeding, and cannot have any infection at the treatment site. Prior to receiving treatment, you should share any health concerns and your medical history with your injector so that they can decide if you can safely receive the treatment.
How many treatment sessions will I need?
During your consultation, a customized treatment plan will be tailored to meet your cosmetic goals. Most often, patients receive between 2 – 4 Kybella treatments before achieving their goals. Kybella treatments must also be spaced about one month apart. You should not get more than six treatments.
